DICK GORDON: THE LEADER OF COVID RESPONSE

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Covid-19 response started with the vision of PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon, who saw testing as a way to “drain the swamp.”

The country had to rely heavily on the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) government-run organization that could muster up the resources to deliver 300 tests a day. Thus, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth), knowing the PRC’s capabilities and capacity, approached the institution to see if they could take up the slack.

Sen. Dick Gordon, heeded the call to provide access to the Filipino people as he envisioned fighting the invisible enemy by testing as many people as quickly as possible. Therefore, identifying and isolating those who contacted COVID-19. From then on, PRC established its first molecular laboratory that could test 2,000 individuals per day.

To date, PRC has 14 molecular laboratories, positioned in key-strategic areas nationwide, capable of testing more than 48,000 tests per day.

But Chairman Gordon did not stop in finding more ways to beat this invisible enemy. PRC continues to search for a more affordable, faster, and non-invasive method of testing. The research led PRC to introduce the country’s first and only saliva RT-PCR test, which only costs PHP 2,000. The saliva test also uses reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which according to the World Health Organization, is considered the gold standard for COVID-19 testing.

PRC, at that time, is offering the cheapest swab RT-PCR test priced at PHP 4,000, further lowering it to 3,800, lower than the PHP 4,500-PHP 5,000 price range set by the Department of Health and Department of Trade and Industry for RT-PCR testing for private laboratories.

To make it more affordable to the public, PRC lowers its testing fees for the second time, pricing it from PHP 3,800 to PHP 2,800 for swab RT-PCR and from PHP 2,000 – PHP 1,500 for saliva RT-PCR test.

More than testing, PRC also established different Isolation Facilities in UP, Ateneo, De La Salle College-Benilde, Makati Science Highschool, Adamson University, and Cagayan to cater to asymptomatic spreaders and prevent household transmission.

Due to the rising cases of COVID-19 last April 2021, PRC Chairman Gordon was alarmed by the news of people dying outside the hospital while waiting to be admitted. Without hesitation, Chairman Gordon immediately deployed a 100-bed capacity Emergency Field Hospital at the Lung Center of the Philippines to serve mild-moderate cases. This initiative was followed by deploying Medical tents at the National Kidney Transplant Institute and assisted 30 more hospitals nationwide. To date, PRC medical tents have catered to more than 34,810 individuals since the start of the pandemic.

PRC also assisted communities through various cash distributions nationwide, the deployment of Hot Meals on Wheels, and other activities to combat COVID-19.

PRC continues to be at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic through various initiatives by the humanitarian organization, together with our partner national societies, staff, volunteers, and through the leadership of Sen. Dick Gordon.

PRC Batanes Chapter Aids Victims of TY Kiko

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to provide help to the Province of Batanes weeks after it was ravaged by Typhoon Kiko.

On October 7, 2021, the Batanes Chapter of PRC extended help to 27 families in Brgy. San Joaquin in Basco, Batanes. These families were categorized as critically affected by Kiko, with their homes being severely damaged by the storm.

PRC gave each family two pieces of tarpaulins to serve as temporary shelter, two jerry cans with water tablets, one set of shelter tool kits to repair their homes. Each shelter tool kit comes with an easy-to-follow manual to help the affected families to rebuild their houses.

PRC’s continuous humanitarian response to the Province of Batanes is in partnership with the American Red Cross.

“The support in Batanes does not stop here. I instructed the PRC Batanes Chapter to continue validating how many are still affected and continue to distribute relief in the affected barangays,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Sen Dick Gordon.

“Walang pagod at handang tumulong ang ating mga Red Cross staff at volunteers upang mas mapabilis ang pagbabakuna para sa mas maraming tao sa malalayong lugar,” Philippine Red Cross Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon said.

PRC continues its Bakuna Bus deployment in Baggao, Cagayan, Tumauini Community CIty, Lian Batangas, and Alangilan Batangas, and vaccinated 1,333 individuals belonging to the A1-A3 category.

PRC Bakuna Bus first started during polio, measles and rubella vaccination under the directives of Chairman Gordon to reach areas where vaccines are not available.

“Ang goal natin sa Red Cross ay mailapit ang bakuna sa mga tao. Kung nagawa natin kontra polio, measles, at rubella, magagawa din natin kontra COVID-19,” Gordon said.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) sent out its Hot Meals On Wheels to provide ready-to-eat meals to 200 lockdown affected residents, composed of persons with disability, solo parents, and senior citizens at Brgy. poblacion 2 and 4, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, Cavite, on October 05, 2021.

PRC Cavite Chapter, led by its administrator Luz Acencio, continues to roll out its Hot Meals On Wheels to provide immediate food assistance to the most vulnerable individuals of Cavite City. Recently, the chapter distributed food packs to 273 individuals at the isolation facilities and vaccination sites.

“Patuloy ang ating paghahatid ng pag-asa sa pamamagitan ng food truck sa Cavite upang matulungan ang naapektuhan ng lockdown. Malapit sa loob ko ang Cavite, dahil ang aking lola ay taga Cavite. Gayun pa man, kahit saan man sulok ng bansa, walang maiiwan sa panahon ng pandemya, at ang Red Cross ay nariyan kung saan ang tulong ay kailangan,” PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon said as he emphasizes PRC’s Covid response.

PRC under the leadership of Chairman Gordon, started various initiatives like Bakuna Bus, Hot Meals on Wheels, Mobile Clinic, and Amphibian trucks to provide access to far-flung communities needing immediate assistance.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) conducted vaccination programs even on weekdays and inoculated 327 individuals from Brgy. Looc, Mandaue, Cebu and Brgy. Camp 4, Talisay, Cebu, through its Bakuna Buses last October 03, 2021.

Through the directives of PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon, PRC continues to deploy its bakuna buses in the different areas in Cebu. The Bakuna Bus deployment will enable PRC to conduct vaccination drives in far-flung areas where residents don’t have access to COVID-19 vaccines.

“Tuloy-tuloy ang ating Philippine Red Cross sa pagbabakuna sa mga malalayong lugar. Nagpapasalamat ako sa ating mga bus donors sa pagpapahiram ng mga buses upang mas mapabilis ang ating pagbabakuna sa mga walang kakayahan makapunta sa mga bakuna centers,” Sen. Dick Gordon said.

PRC Cebu chapter headed by its administrator Atty. Vera De Jesus Patel continues to conduct humanitarian initiatives for the residents of Cebu through the deployment of food trucks, hygiene promotion activities, and continuous testing for Cebu residents.

Recently, the PRC Cebu chapter finalized its partnership with Angkas and will soon introduce the home service Saliva RT-PCR test to make it more convenient for clients who want to get tested for COVID-19.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) aids the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) after being placed on specialized lockdown due to COVID-19 infection to the sisters and staff in the St. Joseph Home.

According to the RVM Congregation announcement, as of September 22, 2021, 50 of the 52 lay personnel who had tested positive are on their way to full recovery among the 62 sisters, 38 are experiencing mild/moderate symptoms, and 13 are severe, while two are fully-recovered. However, nine sisters with ages 79-98 with comorbidities have passed away.

Upon learning the situation at the CVM congregation, PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon. Immediately deployed and sent the PRC Welfare team to coordinate with the institution to provide food and non-food items as per the institution’s request of food and sanitation supplies.

“Ang Philippine Red Cross ay nakikiramay sa mga namatay na sisters sa RVM Congregation dahil sa COVID-19. Kaagad tayong nagpadala ng mga food items at sanitation supplies upang makatulong sa pag galing ng ating mga sisters at staff ng RVM congregation,” Sen. Dick Gordon said.
