PRC urges public for more support to quake-hit families in Mindanao

As relief operations continue in quake-hit areas in Mindanao, the Philippine Red Cross(PRC)reiterated its appeal for more support for thousands of families affected and displaced by strong earthquakes that shook the region on October 16, 2019 followed by a series of equally strong tremors.

PRC Chairman Richard Gordon urged the public including big companies to help in the relief efforts through their donations especially for the most vulnerable residents of North Cotabato and Davao Del Sur, two of the severely hit areas.

“More than 420 Red Cross volunteers are on the ground to aid the affected families and individuals in Regions 11 and 12. Assistance is badly needed in the form of temporary shelters, food, medicine, clean water, tents and essential household items (water containers, kitchen sets, hygiene kits, sleeping kits),” Gordon said.

As of November 4, there are more than 37,000 families or 188,000 individuals affected by the series of earthquakes in Davao and Soccsksargen regions in the past two weeks.

“Other communities are in need of temporary medical facilities as some hospitals were damaged by the tremors. The fear is that the more than 2,600 aftershocks monitored by PHIVOLCS could have further weakened the structures’ foundation,” Gordon added.

Water is an essential need and PRC continues to produce safe drinking water to insure adequacy of supply especially for the residents staying in evacuation areas.

To prevent the spread of water-borne and communicable diseases, PRC’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) team deployed additional water tankers to provide clean and safe water to the affected families and individuals suffering from the disruption of the water systems. Hygiene and sanitation are not overlooked with the installation of additional 20 portable toilets.

PRC North Cotabato-Kidapawan City Chapter provided hot meals to more than 7,300 individuals particularly in Barangays Ilomavis and Balabag, administered first-aid,conducted psychological counselling,distributed beneficiary cards to 300 families staying in the Malasila National Vocational and Technological High School. Potable water is made available to residents of Barangays Ilomavis, Kidapawan and Old Bulatukan in the Municipality of Makilala.

In Davao Del Sur, PRC distributed food items in Barangays Darapuan and Kinuskusan, non-food items, health kits, sleeping kits to 107 families in Barangay Anonang, in the Municipality of Bansalan, water in Barangays Balnate and San Miguel in the municipality of Magsaysay.

The PRC team from Davao del Sur Chapter also conducted hygiene promotion, Red Cross volunteer orientation and set up welfare desk/first aid station in relief areas in the Municipality of Bansalan.

Angel Locsin: More than an angel, a true hero for humanity

Angel Locsin may just have it all – an angelic face, a soaring career and a blissful love story. But what others may be unaware of is her good heart that genuinely cares for others, an angel not just by name but in selfless deeds.

Born as Angelica Colmenares, Angel has been a householdname on TV and in the movie screen. She is known for her remarkable acting skills which earned her various awards and recognition. Being a sought after celebrity, her schedule is almost always full to the hilt. However, there is one thing that a busy schedule cannot keep her from –helping others.

Just a few days ago, Locsin, together with her fiancé Neil Arce, was seen in Davao buying rice, other food items and hygiene essentials then bringing them to Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chapters as assistance to those who were deeply affected by the series of earthquakes in Mindanao. And this is not the first time that Angel has extended help to the vulnerable through the Red Cross.

Since Typhoon Ondoy in 2009, Locsin has been a familiar face during PRC relief packing activities. Popular as she is, she would avoid any special treatment and would insist on sitting on cold floors or anywhere other volunteers would sit while packing relief items. She would carry heavy boxes of goods and assist those who are finding the load too heavy to lift.After the lifting and the sweating, she would also bring food to share with all the volunteers. All of these she would do wearing that charismatic smile which earned her the admiration of many.

Aside from being present in various relief operations, Angel also became an active advocate of blood donation. Having millions of followers and fans, she would regularly promote the life-saving act of voluntary blood donation. She would also find time to get enough sleep and rest to qualify as blood donor and has given enough to be called a Blood Galloner.

Philippine Red Cross Chairman, Sen. Richard Gordon has acknowledged the humanitarian actions of Locsin through a post on his official Facebook page, “Angel indeed, Ms. Angel Locsin, together with her fiancé, Neil Arce, personally went to Davao del Sur Chapter to donate and volunteer in the distribution of relief goods and hygiene kits for the quake-hit families. She has been supporting PRC for a long time and has participated during relief distributions since Typhoon Ondoy. Thank you, Angel, for trusting the Philippine Red Cross.”

Angel may be remembered by many as the fictional Pinay heroine Darna but for the countless lives she has touched through her acts of volunteerism and her altruistic efforts, she will be their real life superhero without a cape or a costume but with an angelic heart for humanity.

PRC aids more than 10,000 during Undas 2019

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) provided assistance to a total of 10, 861 patients during the Undas 2019 operations from October 27 to November 4. This number includes individuals who sustained second degree burns and an animal bite.

Most of the patients (10, 275) had their blood pressure monitored, five (5) individuals were also given wheelchair assistance, while 35 patients who suffered from difficulty of breathing, chest pain, nose bleeding, second degree burns, animal bite, fainting and punctured wound were transported to health facilities for further medical attention.

There were also 16 major cases recorded such as vomiting of blood and chest pain, while 284 patients sustained wounds, others experienced dizziness and vomiting.

“I commend our indefatigable staff and volunteers who provided assistance to our kababayans during the commemoration of Undas. PRC is staying true to its mantra: “Always First, Always Ready, Always There” in serving our countrymen”, said Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon.

PRC’s welfare desks also catered to 246 individuals, assisted through psychosocial support and assistance locating lost family members.

PRC alerted 156 ambulances (on stand-by and roving) and 2, 047 volunteers and staff all over the country.

First aid stations (249) and welfare desks (196) were also set up in different strategic places (cemeteries- 216, highways- 27, bus terminals, ports, and airport- 43).

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is appealing for more support for thousands of families affected by the series of strong earthquakes that jolted Mindanao on October 16, 2019 followed by a series of equally strong tremors.

As families flock to different evacuations centers due to the damage brought by the series of earthquakes and aftershocks, Chairman Richard Gordon reached out to the public to assist in the relief effort through their donations especially for the residents of North Cotabato and Davao Del Sur, two of the badly hit areas.

“More than 35,000 families or 178,305 individual shave been affected in Regions 11 and 12. They are in dire need of assistance such as food, medicine, clean water and essential household items (water containers, kitchen sets, hygiene kits, sleeping kits)especially the most vulnerable,” Gordon said.

PRC has started producing water in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato to ensure adequate and safe drinking water especially for the residents staying in evacuation centers.

“PRC’S Water, Sanitation and Hygiene team provides clean and safe water the affected families and individuals suffering from the disruption of the water systems in these areas,” Gordon added.

PRC North Cotabato-Kidapawan City Chapter provided hot meals to almost 3,000 individuals in Old Bulatukan and Malasila Elementary Schools in Makilala, North Cotabato,administered first-aid,conducted psychological counselling, distributed beneficiary cards to 529 families and potable water to Barangay Ilomavis residents.

In Davao Del Sur, water distribution in the municipalities of Magsaysay, Balabag and Digos City is ongoing, 271 families in the Municipality of Bansalan were also provided with sleeping and health kits while construction of latrines and shower facilities continues in Barangay Tarapuay and Kinuskusan.

“Rest assured that there is a Red Cross that is always first, always ready, always there to help the most vulnerable during calamities.Since the first quake struck Mindanao on October 16, our teams have been working round-the-clock, providing first aid and other humanitarian services,” Gordon said.
