Philippine Red Cross Typhoon Milenyo Operations

Milenyo’s wrath equated to 51 deaths with a minimum 195 injured with dozens of people reportedly missing. In total, at least 13,602 houses are reported destroyed in 21 provinces and 23,790 severely damaged, affecting at least 197,268 persons. A total of 132 evacuation centers were set up by local authorities in stricken areas.

PRC Camarines Sur Chapter reported 1,676 houses were destroyed and another 6,126 damaged. In addition, there were three deaths, including a 6-month old boy who was crushed by a collapsed wall. In seven barangays in Eastern Samar, the local PRC chapter reported that a total of 329 families were affected. PRC chapters based in Metro Manila reported that more than 1,000 families were affected in the cities of Manila, Pasay, Taguig, Marikina, and Paranaque. Milenyo devastated Sorsogon as well, destroying 5,427 houses while damaging 3,005 homes.

At the onset of the disastrous typhoon, PRC deployed teams to make assess the damage and determine the needs of affected communities focusing on relief, health, water and sanitation, psychosocial support, and logistics.

PRC managed to provide 4,774 families with food assistance. It also deployed large numbers of volunteers for search and rescue, assisted families in evacuation centers, and implemented the clean up of roads. PRC also provided cash advances in the amount of PHP 800,000 from its Disaster Management Services, and 400 sacks of rice (through a local branch of the National Food Authority) were made available to various chapters in typhoon-hit areas.

During all these, PRC Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon was at the helm, calling for support to sustain the humanitarian efforts for the thousands and thousands of families affected by Milenyo.

It is a day that the men and women of the Philippine Red Cross will never forget. It is also a day that strengthens the resolve of the not just PRC, but the entire nation.

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon strongly emphasizes practicing safety protocols when going out despite recent drop in reported new cases. The Department of Health (DOH) reported 9,055 new cases last October 05, 2021, compared to the 20,755 new cases reported last September 26, 2021.

“Ang pagbaba ng kaso ng COVID-19 cases does not mean we should let our guard down. Our battle against this invisible virus is far from over, but we can counter it by encouraging everyone to get vaccinated and get tested regularly to make sure that all people around us are safe from transmission,” Sen. Dick Gordon said.

PRC continues its fight to combat COVID-19 through its Bakuna Centers and Bakuna Buses, vaccinating over 284,689 individuals. PRC also conducted various humanitarian initiatives like the Hot Meals On Wheels food trucks which has provided 94,757 ready-to-eat meals to lockdown affected residents nationwide to date.

Sen. Dick Gordon also urged everyone to get tested regularly for COVID-19. PRC recently lowered its prices for swab and saliva RT-PCR tests, which now cost Php2,800 and Php1,500, respectively. To date, PRC conducted 4,517,998 tests, which is 21% of the country’s national testing output.

Red Cross Gives Cash Grant To People of Cam Sur

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to provide aid through its local chapter by rolling out a cash distribution program for the victims of Typhoon Rolly years after the devastating hurricane ravaged the areas of Camarines Sur. Over 390 beneficiaries from four barangays from the Municipality of Nabua were given PHP4,000 each earlier this week.

The PRC Cam Sur Chapter distributed the cash grants in Nabua with 103 beneficiaries from Brgy. Malawag, 66 from Topas Proper, 24 from Sto. Domingo, and 113 from Sta. Lucia.

The cash grant was the second installment of PRC’s Household Livelihood Assistance for the typhoon-ravaged areas of the province.

“Typhoon Rolly has come and go, but the damage it brought is still felt by our kababayans. Kaya naman tuloy-tuloy lang ang ating pagbibigay tulong sa mga kababayan natin diyan sa Cam Sur,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon.

The PRC management said that it will continue to be the lifeline of the people and will not stop its humanitarian work in providing aid to the most vulnerable.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) commemorates the first anniversary since the visit of his eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle to the Philippine Red Cross Logistics and Multipurpose Centre (PLMC) molecular laboratory last October 08, 2020.

Cardinal Tagle visited and blessed the newly built PLMC molecular laboratory, PRC’s 2nd molecular laboratory, in the country. Since then, PRC has established 14 molecular laboratories nationwide and has tested to over 4,528,998, which is 21% of the country’s national testing output.

Dick Gordon said.

PRC continues to push for regular testing as it lowers prices for its swab and saliva RT-PCR test to make it affordable to its clients, who want to get tested for COVID-19. PRC also continues its operation in partner malls as saliva collection sites to make them accessible and convenient to everyone.

PRC also is very active in its COVID-19 response such as the Bakuna Centers, the deployment of Bakuna Buses to vaccinate individuals in far-flung areas, the deployment of food trucks to feed lockdown-affected individuals, and the establishment of the different PRC Isolation Facilities and Emergency Field Hospital for mild to moderate cases of COVID-19.

DICK GORDON: THE LEADER OF COVID RESPONSE

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Covid-19 response started with the vision of PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon, who saw testing as a way to “drain the swamp.”

The country had to rely heavily on the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) government-run organization that could muster up the resources to deliver 300 tests a day. Thus, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth), knowing the PRC’s capabilities and capacity, approached the institution to see if they could take up the slack.

Sen. Dick Gordon, heeded the call to provide access to the Filipino people as he envisioned fighting the invisible enemy by testing as many people as quickly as possible. Therefore, identifying and isolating those who contacted COVID-19. From then on, PRC established its first molecular laboratory that could test 2,000 individuals per day.

To date, PRC has 14 molecular laboratories, positioned in key-strategic areas nationwide, capable of testing more than 48,000 tests per day.

But Chairman Gordon did not stop in finding more ways to beat this invisible enemy. PRC continues to search for a more affordable, faster, and non-invasive method of testing. The research led PRC to introduce the country’s first and only saliva RT-PCR test, which only costs PHP 2,000. The saliva test also uses reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which according to the World Health Organization, is considered the gold standard for COVID-19 testing.

PRC, at that time, is offering the cheapest swab RT-PCR test priced at PHP 4,000, further lowering it to 3,800, lower than the PHP 4,500-PHP 5,000 price range set by the Department of Health and Department of Trade and Industry for RT-PCR testing for private laboratories.

To make it more affordable to the public, PRC lowers its testing fees for the second time, pricing it from PHP 3,800 to PHP 2,800 for swab RT-PCR and from PHP 2,000 – PHP 1,500 for saliva RT-PCR test.

More than testing, PRC also established different Isolation Facilities in UP, Ateneo, De La Salle College-Benilde, Makati Science Highschool, Adamson University, and Cagayan to cater to asymptomatic spreaders and prevent household transmission.

Due to the rising cases of COVID-19 last April 2021, PRC Chairman Gordon was alarmed by the news of people dying outside the hospital while waiting to be admitted. Without hesitation, Chairman Gordon immediately deployed a 100-bed capacity Emergency Field Hospital at the Lung Center of the Philippines to serve mild-moderate cases. This initiative was followed by deploying Medical tents at the National Kidney Transplant Institute and assisted 30 more hospitals nationwide. To date, PRC medical tents have catered to more than 34,810 individuals since the start of the pandemic.

PRC also assisted communities through various cash distributions nationwide, the deployment of Hot Meals on Wheels, and other activities to combat COVID-19.

PRC continues to be at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic through various initiatives by the humanitarian organization, together with our partner national societies, staff, volunteers, and through the leadership of Sen. Dick Gordon.

PRC Batanes Chapter Aids Victims of TY Kiko

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to provide help to the Province of Batanes weeks after it was ravaged by Typhoon Kiko.

On October 7, 2021, the Batanes Chapter of PRC extended help to 27 families in Brgy. San Joaquin in Basco, Batanes. These families were categorized as critically affected by Kiko, with their homes being severely damaged by the storm.

PRC gave each family two pieces of tarpaulins to serve as temporary shelter, two jerry cans with water tablets, one set of shelter tool kits to repair their homes. Each shelter tool kit comes with an easy-to-follow manual to help the affected families to rebuild their houses.

PRC’s continuous humanitarian response to the Province of Batanes is in partnership with the American Red Cross.

“The support in Batanes does not stop here. I instructed the PRC Batanes Chapter to continue validating how many are still affected and continue to distribute relief in the affected barangays,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Sen Dick Gordon.
