To further amplify the importance of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as a lifesaving skill and reinforce its call for more first aiders, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) held a series of activities nationwide to celebrate the National CPR Day on July 17 with the theme: Shaping Culture: Towards a CPR-Ready Philippines.

A simultaneous CPR was conducted at the University of the East Campus, targeting 2,000 students and school personnel. Meanwhile, 50,000 individuals participated in a mass CPR demonstration at PRC’s 102 chapters across the country.

One of the major highlights of the program was the launch of the CPR Caravan, which will run from July 18 to the World Restart a Heart Day on October 16. The Caravan aims to educate at least one million participants nationwide, equipping them with knowledge and competence on how to save lives through performing CPR.

The PRC is offering these training sessions to the public for free. The CPR demonstration schedules will be announced soon.

“We’re observing CPR Day by Proclamation 551 or the “National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Day.” You cannot save a life if you don’t know what to do. That’s why it is important to learn and practice that lifesaving skill.  I even trained my grandchildren to do CPR,” PRC Chairman and CEO Dick Gordon stated.

“By learning CPR, you can be a hero because it gives you the power to save lives. We’re doing these efforts because we want to build a culture of safety among Filipinos by having at least one trained first aider in every household,” he added.

Meanwhile, PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang mentioned that for this year, the PRC is promoting the ASAP strategy in implementing CPR knowledge and skill effectively,” This year, we are highlighting our ASAP strategy for CPR: A for Awareness, we have to make more people to be aware about the importance of CPR; S for Skills, you need to be skilled to perform it right and well; A for Access, we are influencing people to be sustainable by using jerry cans as a DIY mannequin for example; and P for Perform, when you finally learn it, you’ll be more confident to perform it. The PRC continues its call to action by raising awareness to achieve a CPR-Ready Philippines.

These initiatives are in support of the implementation of Republic Act (RA) No. 10871, a law aimed at equipping citizens with the necessary knowledge and skills to respond to health emergencies.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) marked National CPR Day last Monday by training over 7,000 people on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) through its 102 chapters across the country.

Equipping Filipinos with crucial life-saving skills, PRC conducted 63 comprehensive training sessions to equip communities with the knowledge and skills required to respond effectively to emergencies.

PRC Chairman and CEO Dick Gordon commended the exceptional efforts of volunteers and staff for the National CPR Day. “It is our goal here at the PRC to have one first aider in every home. Equipping ourselves and our family members with first aid and CPR skills multiplies the chances of survival in emergency situations, creating a nation that is more resilient and better prepared to handle crises,” said Gordon.

Aside from the 7,000 people trained with CPR last July 17, PRC yesterday conducted a first aid and CPR demonstration for the members of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) which supports Chairman Gordon’s vision of building a prepared nation.

Gordon sent Jaylord Abrigado, an officer of PRC’s Safety Services to present to the broadcasting community after KBP Chairman Herman Z. Basbaño requested for hands-on instruction in essential CPR techniques and effective first aid responses to various emergencies.

“Our mission at PRC revolves around saving lives. We are glad to equip KBP members with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond effectively in emergencies. This collaboration marks the beginning of an important alliance, aimed at strengthening community resilience and fostering a culture of preparedness,” said Gordon.

“We are deeply grateful to the Philippine Red Cross for sharing their expertise with us. This training not only enhances the safety awareness of our broadcasting professionals but also empowers them to play a significant role in saving lives in times of crisis,” expressed KBP Chairman Herman Basbaño.

PRC and KBP are exploring a potential partnership through a memorandum of agreement (  MOA ) .

From January to July 2023, the PRC has trained over 84,000 first aiders across the country.

Philippine Red Cross staff and volunteers first aid training

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) stresses the importance of training in first aid as it joins the World First Aid Day celebration on September 12, with the theme “Lifelong First Aid.” The world celebrates World First Aid Day every second Saturday of September.

Emergencies such as a fall, poisoning, and choking can occur at home, at work, and in social settings. Having a trained first aider ensures prompt action can be taken. The first four minutes of an emergency is a critical period; if action is taken, the patient has higher chances of survival. PRC’s first aid training course includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), an emergency lifesaving procedure done on patients whose hearts have stopped beating. Researches show that cardiac arrest patients who are given CPR in pre-hospital settings have higher chances of survival.

PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon envisions having one member per Filipino family who knows first aid, including CPR. “Kapag may training ka sa first aid, may lakas ng loob ka rumesponde kapag may emergency, na maaaring mangyari sa mga oras na kasama mo ang iyong pamilya, mga kaibigan, o mga ka-opisina” Gordon said.

The PRC Safety Services Team has trained over 58,000 individuals in first aid from January 1, 2022 to September 26, 2022 in its 102 chapters. It provides the following first aid training courses: (1) Standard First Aid Training and Basic Life Support/CPR – AED Training, (2) Occupational First Aid Training and Basic Life Support/CPR – AED Training, and (3) Emergency First Aid Training. Those who have taken any of the courses may renew their certificate every two years.

Those interested in taking a first aid training course with the PRC may call the following numbers: (02) 8790-2365 / 8790-2366 for further information.

IN CASE of a sudden cardiac arrest at home, at work, or in a public place, do you know what to do?

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is set to mobilize its staff and volunteers to conduct a mass cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstration to equip Filipino families with this life-saving skill.

For this month, PRC will go to schools, offices, and public places to teach Filipinos how to conduct a hands-only CPR to mark the National CPR Day, on July 17, in cooperation with the Department of Health, the Philippine Heart Association, and the American Heart Association.

PRC Chairman Richard Gordon said the mass CPR demonstration is a preliminary effort to strengthen its call to have one first aider in every household and workplace.

“We have our volunteers nationwide, but no first responder can respond as quickly as a neighbor, a family member, and a co-worker. When that person knows first aid, further injuries and loss of lives can be averted,” Gordon said.

PRC has identified over 110 locations, which include schools, companies, and parks. PRC also tapped athletic leagues to perform whole CPR cycle.

The mass CPR campaign was conducted to maximize the Republic Act No. 10871 or the “Basic Life Support Training Schools Act,” which requires basic education students to undergo age-appropriate basic life-saving training.

PRC, as the leading first aid provider in the country, offers a wide range of first aid and basic life support training courses, including standard first and basic life support for all ages, occupational first aid and basic life support, emergency first aid, junior first aid, and water safety programs.
