The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Lapu-Lapu/Cordova Chapter recently provided free ambulance transport service to a 47-year-old male patient who sustained injuries in a motorcycle accident. The incident occurred last may 22, on the remote island of Olanggo, located approximately 20 minutes away from the Lapu-Lapu mainland by sea.

The patient, who suffered a head injury resulting in dizziness and swelling, required immediate medical attention, including a crucial CT scan. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, PRC swiftly organized a transportation plan, in coordination with Lapu-Lapu City Rescue, to ensure the patient’s safe transfer to the Lifestream Diagnostic Clinic, where the necessary diagnostic procedure could be performed.

In the words of PRC Chairman Richard J. Gordon, “Our primary objective is to provide swift and effective assistance to those in need, regardless of their circumstances. We are proud to have been able to extend our free ambulance transport service to this injured patient, ensuring that he received the necessary medical attention. It is through the collective efforts of our dedicated volunteers and the support of our generous donors that we are able to make a tangible impact on people’s lives. This incident exemplifies our commitment to serving humanity and underscores the importance of accessible healthcare for all.”

PRC’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) volunteers transported the indigent patient from Olanggo to the mainland, and subsequently to the Lifestream Diagnostic Clinic, ensuring timely access to the required medical facilities.

The ambulance transport service provided free by PRC is a showcase of its commitment to service.

Cebu City, Philippines – The Philippine Red Cross swiftly responded to a maritime incident that occurred last 21 May 2023, involving the Supercat Ferry Corp passenger vessel and a cargo vessel along the route from Ormoc to Pier 1 of Cebu.

PRC swiftly responded to the scene. The PRC teams provided immediate medical assistance and psychological support to those affected by the incident. In total, 36 patients received treatment from the PRC medical personnel, with six of them requiring further medical attention at the University of Cebu Medical Center.

The Supercat Ferry Corp, carrying a total of 208 passengers, encountered the cargo vessel in what authorities are describing as a collision. The exact details of the incident are yet to be determined, and investigations are currently underway to establish the cause of the accident.

PRC deployed two ambulance teams from its Lapu-Lapu/Cordova Chapter, consisting of four highly trained emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. Additionally, an ambulance team from the PRC Cebu Chapter, comprising two EMS personnel, three welfare services volunteers, and two first aiders, was also dispatched to the site.

“We extend our utmost appreciation to the dedicated efforts of the Philippine Red Cross teams who promptly responded to the maritime incident near Cebu. Their professionalism and expertise in providing immediate medical care and psychological support to those affected have been commendable,” stated PRC Chairman Richard J. Gordon.

The maritime incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols and ensuring the preparedness of emergency response teams.

Philippine Red Cross gives clean water to TY Odette affected families

“Kahit ilang buwan na ang nakalipas mula nang humagupit ang Super Typhoon Odette, hindi pa rin titigil and Philippine Red Cross sa pagpapadala ng tulong sa ating mga kababayan,” Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon said.

Since starting its response to Typhoon Odette in Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova town, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has now distributed more than one million liters of water to affected residents of Lapu-Lapu City and the municipality of Cordova. Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova were among those hardest hit by Super Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai), which made landfall in the Philippines on December 16, 2021. Super Typhoon Odette affected 353 cities and municipalities, destroying or damaging more than one million houses in the Philippines.

PRC continues its assistance to Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova. As of March 31, 2022, it has conducted hygiene promotion activities among 65,966 individuals. It has also served hot meals to 3,166 persons and given jerry cans, mosquito nets, and tarpaulin to 451 families, among other forms of assistance.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, on the city’s Public Information Office Facebook page, said the city’s doors are now open to welcome everyone, both local and foreign tourists, as long as they are vaccinated.

As the Philippine Red Cross(PRC) Bakuna Buses continue to bring vaccines closer to your doorstep, one of the humanitarian organization’s buses returned to Lapu-Lapu City last October 28, 2021, to vaccinate more than 400 individuals from the COVID-19 priority group A4 or essential workers.

According to PRC Cebu Chapter, one of the Bakuna Buses provided by UBE Express drove to the Mactan Economic Zone in Barangay Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City vaccinating over 424 individuals from Lear Corporation. By the end of the day, over 335 got their first dose, while 89 received their second dose.

“Kailangang unahin ang pagbabakuna ng mga COVID-19 priority groups, kasama na rin dito ang mga essential workers dahil sila ang mga most at risk. Kaya naman patuloy ang mga volunteers at staff ng Red Cross na sumisikap araw araw upang mailapit ang bakuna sa inyong komunidad. Layunin namin pagsilbihan ang mga mamamayan, lalo na ang mga nangangailangan. Walang dapat iwanan,” PRC Chairman at CEO Senator Dick Gordon.

Apart from the Mactan Economic Zone in Lapu-Lapu City, the humanitarian organization has also opened a Bakuna Center in the Light Industry Science Park II (LSPI II). This Bakuna Center, established by the PRC Laguna Chapter, was opened last September 17, 2021, and is located at Barangay Real, Calamba City, which also targets COVID-19 priority group A4 or essential workers.
