Year: 2021

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) leads the groundbreaking ceremony of the new PRC Blood Bank that will soon rise in Sta. Rosa Laguna on October 27, 2021. The blood bank will serve the entire city and nearby cities such as Binan and San Pedro, Laguna, with a total population of 1,148, 250 as of 2020.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be attended virtually by PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon, PRC Secretary General Elizabeth Zavalla, City Mayor Hon. Arlene Arcillas, Chairman of the Laguna Chapter Dir. Jaime B. Ching, Chapter Administrator Frank Gray M. Sorromero, and President of Isuzu Philippines Corporation Mr. Hajime Koso.

“Ako ay nagpapasalamat sa ating local government unit, donors, Board of Directors, staff, at volunteers sa inyong dedikasyon upang masimulan itong blood bank facility. Sa pamamagitan ng blood bank ay mas marami tayong matutulungan na higit na nangangailangan ng dugo. Mapapabilis din ang paghahatid ng services gaya ng blood services, disaster response, recovery, psychosocial first aid amongst others. Patuloy ang Philippine Red Cross sa pagtupad sa aming mantra to be always first, always ready, and always there kung saan nangangailangan ng tulong,” PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon said.

PRC Laguna Chapter dispensed 71,640 units of blood from 2019 to September 2021. The soon-to-be-constructed blood bank will increase the chapter’s capacity to serve more individuals who need blood.

More than blood, the PRC Laguna Chapter started various initiatives to combat COVID-19. The PRC Laguna Chapter collected more than 5,995 saliva specimens in its saliva collection sites since opening in February 2021. The chapter also vaccinated more than 16,255 individuals in its Bakuna Centers and Bakuna Bus through the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC.)

The PRC Laguna Chapter continues to deliver its humanitarian services to alleviate human suffering and uplift the dignity of the most vulnerable community of Laguna.

As the Philippine Red Cross stands to provide hope for the most vulnerable whom they serve without discrimination, the humanitarian organization deployed one of their Bakuna Buses to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Binangonan, Rizal, vaccinating over 500 persons deprived of liberty.

“Patuloy ang mga staff at volunteers ng Red Cross na sumisikap nang bente-kwatrong oras bawat araw upang mapaglingkuran ang mga Pilipino. Nais naming maabot ang bawa’t sulok ng Pilipinas upang mahatid ng bakuna at makamit ang herd immunity,” reiterates Senator Dick Gordon, Chairman and CEO of PRC.

Out of the 107,497 individuals that the PRC Bakuna Bus vaccinated as of October 25, 2021, over 3,866 are persons deprived of liberty in BJMPs located in NCR, Region 6, and Region 7 with Sinovac.

According to PRC Health Services, the PRC Bakuna Bus drove to Navotas BJMP vaccinating over 747, Kalibo Aklan BJMP vaccinating over 142, and Iloilo BJMP vaccinating over 977 individuals with their first dose.

Additionally, the PRC Bakuna Buses in Cebu has also been driven to Talisay BJMP vaccinating over 1,700 individuals, and Bogo City BJMP vaccinating 300 individuals. On October 29, and 30, 2021, the PRC Bakuna Bus targets to vaccinate over 1000 individuals Danao City.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to be the government’s active ally in its aggressive National COVID-19 Vaccination Program to beat the pandemic. It recently inaugurated its 25th Bakuna Center located at CB Mall Urdaneta, Pangasinan, last October 26, 2021.

“Habang patuloy ang ating laban sa COVID-19, kailangan nating maging maliksi. Ipinapadala namin ang mga bakuna sa mas maraming rehiyon, nag-dedeploy ng karagdagang mga tao, at higit sa lahat pinapabakunahan ang mas maraming tao laban sa COVID-19,” reiterates Senator Dick Gordon.

Over 92 individuals from COVID-19 priority groups A4 received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine supplied by the government in the dry run. The kick-off is the start of PRC Pangasinan’s regular vaccination schedule which plans to innoculate Pangasinenses every Thursday and Friday.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) provided the Maring-affected communities with food and non-food relief assistance through the help of the PRC chapters and Partner National Societies. PRC assisted thousands of families since Severe Tropical Storm Maring made landfall last October 11, 2021.

STS Maring affected 1,920 barangays in 127 municipalities located in 10 provinces, helping a total of 100,241 families or 400,401 individuals. STS Maring caused 41 deaths in Northern Luzon and damaged 6,360 houses, placing the affected provinces under a state of calamity.

PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon immediately mobilized and deployed its assets to support the provinces in rescue and relief operations. PRC distributed basic needs such as clothing to 649 individuals in La Union, 3,139 bottles of waters, 2,000 jerry cans, 1,000 kitchen sets, 2,000 mosquito nets, 2,000 blankets, 2,000 sleeping mats, and 972 mattresses.

PRC also provided the provinces with bread to 1,665 individuals, 8,754 individuals with Hot Meals, and food items to 507 families.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, PRC made sure to promote hygiene to 1,075 individuals, distributing 92,000 liters of clean water serving 5,288 individuals. Face masks were also distributed to 2,047 individuals to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 while conducting relief operations.

Dick Gordon said.

PRC continues to provide relief operations as help is still on the way to aid the Maring-battered communities.

A year after Typhoon Rolly (Goni) hit the Bicol Region, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is continuing its recovery operations by helping the victims of last year’s super typhoon to stand on their feet and begin life anew.

On October 26, the final materials for shelter construction were delivered to Brgy. Bubulusan, Guinobatan, where the 2nd batch of houses are about to be completed.

For this batch, 25 houses are undergoing finishing works in the Rolly-affected community in Guinobatan. PRC plans to erect 164 houses in total as part of its shelter construction and monitoring activities in the said province. Including this batch, PRC has already built 30 houses, one in Bgry. Salvacion in Daraga, and 29 houses in Brgy. Bubulusan in Guinobatan.

“What we are doing in the Bicol Region is critical. We need to help them quickly to rebuild their lives by building their homes. Tulad ng sinabi ko nuong isang taon nang tumama ang bagyong Rolly, hindi natin dapat pabayaan ang ating mga kababayan na harapin ang mga trahedya ng mag-isa. Nandito ang Red Cross para umagapay, hangga’t makakaya namin, hindi kami titigil sa pagtulong,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon.

PRC targets to complete all 164 houses by June of next year to be ready for occupancy by the project beneficiaries. Each house comes complete with electrical works, plumbing, and a water system.

This week, the country’s premier humanitarian organization continues to send their Bakuna Buses to far-flung areas, especially communities that do not have easy access to vaccines.

“We commit to intensify our vaccination efforts as we all have one goal, to reach herd immunity,” reiterates Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon.

Last October 25, 2021, one of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Bakuna Buses drove to Penablanca, Cagayan aiming to jab 167 individuals with Sinovac on the first day, and 95 individuals on the second day.

On October 29 and 30, 2021, PRC volunteers and staff in Cagayan will drive to Aparri East to vaccinate 189 individuals, and Buguey 1 to vaccinate 120 with Sinovac.

According to PRC Health Services, as of October 25, the PRC Bakuna Bus in Cagayan provided by Victory Liner has vaccinated over 5,382 individuals ever since the humanitarian organization first rolled out the buses last September 9, 2021. Out of the 5,382, over 2,960 are now fully vaccinated by the PRC Cagayan Chapter.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has already trained 43,206 first aiders from January to October of this year while the country is battling COVID-19. PRC says that the trained first aiders can help reduce the strain on the country’s emergency medical services as qualified first aiders are trained in recognizing and treating a vast variety of injuries and illnesses that can occur at home and in the workplace.

As the COVID-19 pandemic overloads the country’s medical systems, trained first aiders have the skills that can help prevent someone’s condition from deteriorating whilst waiting for an emergency to come. Knowing when and how to give proper CPR can be the difference between life and death, especially during a pandemic.

The PRC-trained first aiders come from all regions of the Philippines with 13,918 trained in the National Capital Region, 5,401 in Northern Luzon, 4,138 in Central Luzon, 4,473 in Southern Tagalog, 1,869 in Bico Region, 6,805 in the Visayas, and 6,602 in Mindanao.

“Basic first aid skills are very important and making it accessible to all is an important humanitarian act. It is, therefore, a crucial must. During the pandemic, with restrictions and safety protocols, PRC is finding ways to reach more people and to fulfill the goal of having one first aider per household. We are encouraging everyone to be that first aid hero in your family, in your school, and your community,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon.

This pandemic has made learning first aid quite challenging and the PRC has adjusted to the new normal by teaching this life-saving training online. For more details regarding PRC’s first aid training course, contact the Safety Services Department via email [email protected] / [email protected] or call them at (02)-8790-2366.

Last week, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) congratulated its own Mr. Chino Kairo Serrano for ranking first in the recent 2021 Nutritionist Dietician Licensure Exams. In an interview last October 22, 2021, Chino provides some tips for those who aspire to become nutritionist-dieticians.

First, he shared that one should always prioritize and treasure what was learned in college. “I believe that all you have to do is just always do your best. Prioritize the “learnings”, and then grades will follow,” he said. For him, being in college is the time where one should learn the fundamentals of your program or chosen career path. That is why he made the most out of it by learning everything he could but at the same time making sure to enjoy his college days. He mentioned that the real challenge for him was life after college as he shared that it is different once you are employed. “My current role here in PRC is my first real job. Learning doesn’t stop even while at work, so I do my best to learn as much as I can wherever I am,” he added.

Secondly, he believes in a strong sense of gratitude. “The most important tip I can provide is to trust in the plans of the Lord,” he emphasized. Sharing his thoughts about all the challenges he recently experienced, he said; “I still do not understand a lot of the things that happened to me this year. Aside from the many difficulties our country is facing due to the pandemic and our board exams which was moved to October instead of July, the most difficult was when my mother died three months ago due to COVID-19. Despite these, I didn’t stop me from believing that the Lord had plans for me.”

For Chino, topping the recent board exams was just a small feat. He continues to learn and evolve, “I remember that even during college, I experienced many drawbacks and turnarounds. Also, I didn’t even know that Nutrition was a program when I entered college.” Now, he believes that he has come to understand things more clearly, “It turns out that my plans were different from the Lord’s plans, but I would like to think that this is the materialization of His plans for that season in my life.”

Chino Kairo Serrano is an officer under the PRC Water Sanitation and Hygiene Unit (WASH) working on the Typhoon Response Operations with UNICEF and the WASH project under the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

PRC La Union Maring Recovery Operations

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to assist La Union weeks after being hit by Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Maring (Kompasu), causing serious flooding in the province.

Last October 15, 2021, the provincial government of La Union declared the province under a state of calamity by Sangguniang Panlalawigan Resolution No. 1413 due to devastation caused by STS Maring.

PRC, headed by PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon, ordered the immediate deployment of the Humanitarian Caravan to the province at the height of STS Maring. The humanitarian caravan included a 6×6 truck, a rescue boat, a command post, a rescue vehicle, a food truck. Food items were distributed to provide immediate relief to the victims. These included 350 kilos of rice, one hundred cans of sardines, one hundred cans of beef loaf, and one hundred cans of tuna.

STS Maring affected ten provinces, 127 municipalities, and 1,920 barangays, composed of 100,241 families or 400,401 individuals. PRC, through its chapters, assisted the affected barangays in rescue and relief operations, including in La Union, which was severely hit, damaging PHP369.3 million worth of agricultural products.

PRC provided the province of La Union with 1,839 bottles of water, 649 sets of clothing, 331 Kitchen sets, 331 Plastic Mats, 1000 Mosquito Nets, 1,000 Jerry Cans, and 1,000 blankets for 500 families.

PRC also provided hot meals to 6,226 individuals, psychosocial support, a child-friendly space to 167 individuals, and first aid management to 276 individual. Despite the ongoing pandemic, PRC also distributed 1,347 face masks, 550 hygiene kits, and conducted hygiene promotion for 610 individuals to ensure the safety of the beneficiaries.

“Hindi natin papabayaan ang mga taong nangangailangan ng tulong lalo na sa panahon ng pandemya. Kaya patuloy ang Philippine Red Cross sa pagtulong sa mga most vulnerable upang mabawasan ang kanilang paghihirap,” Sen. Dick Gordon said.

PRC relief operations are still ongoing as of October 25, 2021, to provide immediate assistance to affected families by STS Maring nationwide.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC), through the leadership of its Chairman and CEO, continues to assist communities affected by tropical storm Maring (kompasu)  through non-food items distribution.

PRC distributed items such as 1000 hygiene kits, 2,000 sleeping mats, 2,000 mosquito nets, 2,000 blankets, 2,000 10L jerry cans, 1000 kitchen kits, and 85 sacks of clothing. 500 families each from La Union and Ilocos Sur will receive the non-food items.

“Mahirap ang pinagdadaanan ng ating mga kababayan sa mga lugar ng La Union at Ilocos Sur na kung saan lagpas tao ang baha. Nagpadala na tayo noong kasagsagan ng humanitarian caravan upang makatulong sa clearing operations, hot meals distribution, at rescue operations. Makakaasa kayo na patuloy ang Philippine Red Cross sa pag tulong sa mga naapektuhan ni TS Maring,” PRC Chairman and CEO Sen.Dick Gordon said.

The relief operations are part of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) disaster relief emergency funds and PRC prepositioned goods to provide immediate assistance to affected families by typhoons, calamities, and disasters.
