Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon restates the importance of practicing proper health protocols to prevent another surge in COVID-19 cases, after the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) has placed the National Capital Region and seven other provinces under less stringent Alert Level 2 beginning February 1.

According to Department of Health Secretary Fransisco Duque, the NCR has seen a decline in Covid-19 cases over the past few days, and vaccination coverage is high in the metropolis.

“Kahit na ibinaba ang alert level sa iba’t ibang lugar sa bansa, dapat ay patuloy pa rin tayo mag practice ng health protocols, magpatest, at magpabakuna upang maiwasan natin ang muling pagtaas ng COVID-19,”

The PRC Bakuna Buses and Bakuna Centers continue to vaccinate those individuals who have not yet had their vaccinations and also provide booster shots as additional protection to fully vaccinated individuals.

With over 963, 994 doses administered by the Red Cross, PRC Chairman Gordon encourages everyone to get vaccinated and get tested regularly against COVID-19 for immunity and protection against the highly transmissible virus and its variants.

The ongoing surge of COVID-19 cases, since the year 2022 started, which affected thousands of individuals as the Philippines are tallying 25,000 new daily cases on average in the past three weeks. The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) intensified its vaccination program through the continuous deployment of Bakuna Bus, Bakuna Centers, and Bakuna team that vaccinated 4,467 individuals last January 27, 2022.

PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon said that continuous operation of the Bakuna Centers, Bakuna Bus, and Bakuna Team augmentation to help the local government unit (LGU) vaccinate more individuals who want to get protected from the virus.

Through PRC’s 26 Bakuna Centers nationwide was able to vaccinate 1,944 individuals consisting of first dose, second dose, and booster shots. PRC Bakuna Buses travelled to far-flung areas and vaccinated 1,472 individuals to make COVID-19 vaccines accessible to the residents. PRC Bakuna Team also assisted the different LGU in Cagayan, Quezon Lucena, Iligan, Basilan, Agusan del Norte, Sultan Kudarat and Bataan to vaccinate 1,051 individuals.

With the current trend of COVID-19 cases in the country, PRC Chairman Gordon encourages everyone to get COVID-19 vaccines for protection against the highly transmissible virus.

“Inilalapit na ng Red Cross ang mga Bakuna sa inyong mga lugar upang mas marami ang ating maprotektahan. Patuloy natin isinasagawa ang ating vaccination upang makabalik na ang tao sa trabaho, makapasok na ulit ang mga bata sa eskwelahan, at

mabuksan na ulit ang mga kabuhayaan ng mga apektado ng COVID-19 pandemic,” Gordon said.

To date, PRC’s Bakuna Centers and Bakuna Buses nationwide have already vaccinated 897,993 individuals.

“With the current Omicron surge, there is a rising need to ramp up vaccination rates. We should do all we can to boost up vaccinations,” said Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman Senator Dick Gordon as he tells the public that PRC will be partnering with Lazada, Southeast Asia’s leading eCommerce platform. The partnership aims to boost vaccination rates through Lazada’s donations of Php 2.2 million, enabling PRC to support its Bakuna Bus Deployments up to May 2022.

According to Senator Dick Gordon, “This donation will be able to help more communities in the fight against COVID-19. The Philippine Red Cross is very grateful for your efforts in helping us reach out to the most vulnerable.”

In partnership with Lazada, the PRC will deploy Bakuna Bus to Brgy. Gulod, Nova, Quezon City administering 500 booster shots in the community beginning January 26, 2022, Wednesday.

PRC will also administer primary doses to Lazada Riders and 300 clients at the Lazada Hub in Cabuyao Laguna.

As of January 24, 2022, the PRC has administered 884,279 doses while fully vaccinating 328,605 individuals in their 26 Bakuna Center, 17 Bakuna Buses, and Bakuna Teams nationwide.

Founded in 2012, Lazada Group is the leading eCommerce platform in Southeast Asia accelerating progress in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam through commerce and technology.

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) distributed more than four million liters of clean water to Typhoon Odette (International name: Rai) affected residents in Cebu, Bohol, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Surigao del Norte, Siargao, Palawan, Agusan del Norte, and Iligan.

PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon said that it is important to provide swift assistance in water distribution to places with limited to no supply of clean water to prevent waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid fever, and other diseases caused by dirty water.

Through PRC’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) unit, PRC can promote hygiene, provide access to water, and sanitation facilities in long-term programming.

PRC reported that it distributed 4,472,242 liters of water to 200,793 individuals since the start of Typhoon Odette Operations. Chairman Gordon said that water collected by PRC is cleaned in the water treatment unit before being loaded into the water tankers for distribution and public consumption.

“We need to restore the lifelines immediately in every area na naapektuhan ng Bagyong Odette.

PRC distributed 1,173,250 liters of water in Cebu, 810,000 liters in Bohol, 564,894 liters in Negros Occidental, 364,038 liters in Negros Oriental, 393,760 liters in Surigao del Norte, 449,369 liters in Siargao Island, 338,000 liters in Palawan, 5,340 liters in Agusan del Norte, and 13,610 liters in Iligan.

PRC water tankers are vital to the country’s need to promote proper hygiene and provide access to clean water to prevent diseases like cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, and typhoid. To date, PRC has 22 water tanker units nationwide, ready to provide clean and potable water in times of disaster, calamity, and conflict.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) faces two challenges at the same time in responding to the needs of the Filipino people affected by Super Typhoon Odette in Palawan, Visayas, and the Mindanao region and manning the vaccination centers, testing sites, and isolation facilities to fight the pandemic.

PRC led by its Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon mobilized PRC assets such as Payloaders, Food Trucks, Water tankers, Rescue Vehicles, etc. in restoring the lifelines in the areas battered by Typhoon Odette.

Despite the ongoing disaster response in the different areas hit by Typhoon Odette, PRC continues to be at the forefront in battling the COVID-19 pandemic. Chairman Gordon leads the humanitarian organization in the establishment of 14 molecular laboratories nationwide to test more people to isolate positive individuals and prevent household transmission.

Since the beginning of 2022, the Philippines is currently experiencing a surge of COVID-19 positive individuals with a daily average of close to 30,000 over the last two weeks.

It is through the vision of Chairman Gordon to implement ways to curb the pandemic to save lives through testing, isolation of positive individuals, and vaccinating the unvaccinated to protect the Filipino people from the virus.

 Testing

PRC Chairman Gordon also pushes for testing for early detection amidst the rising cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Chairman Gordon introduced last January 20, 2021, the saliva RT-PCR test. Chairman Gordon said that the saliva RT-PCR test is a game-changer in testing as it is more affordable, faster, and non-invasive, and requires less manpower suitable for far-flung areas.

To also make testing accessible to the public, PRC partnered with different shopping malls such as SM, Robinsons, Ayala, and Araneta to serve as saliva collection sites. PRC also partnered with Angkas for a saliva test home service.

“Tayo ay magpatest lagi upang malaman natin kung kailangan mag-isolate  kapag  positibo sa COVID-19. The best protection is detecting the virus early and isolating the infected individuals to prevent the spread of the virus. Pinababa nang Red Cross ang RT-PCR test at ito ay ang pinaka mababa sa bansa,” Chairman Gordon said.

To date, PRC tested 5,352,770 individuals in their 14 molecular laboratories nationwide comprising a wide majority of the national testing output. PRC COVID-19 testing paved the way to save individuals from contracting the virus.

PRC Isolation facilities

The sudden surge of COVID-positive cases in March 2021 heightened the need for facilities that care for asymptomatic patients and those with mild symptoms.

The pressure became so intense that Chairman Dick Gordon invited MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos and LGU Mayors on Good Friday last year to present his plan to address this crisis which would entail the conversion of idle classrooms into isolation facilities.

These repurposed classrooms and facilities in UP, Ateneo, Makati Science High School, Cagayan, St. Benilde, and Adamson house asymptomatic and mild patients to allow them to be isolated for 14 days away from their households. These individuals are provided with essential needs such as beds, toiletries, isolation kits, and food.

The PRC isolation facility program is only one among the various initiatives dedicated to enhancing the management of COVID-19 in the country. To date, 4,989 patients were served since the start of operations.

“Maraming salamat sa aming mga partners at donors para sa aming isolation facilities upang maiwasan ang hawaan sa mga household. Sa patuloy na pagtaas ng kaso ng COVID-19 sa bansa, isa lamang sa aming initiatives ang isolation facilities para tulungan ang mga apektado ng COVID-19 na may mapuntahan upang di mahawaan ang mga pamilya nila at iba pang tao,” Dick Gordon said.

Vaccination

To ensure everyone’s safety against COVID-19, Chairman Gordon said that vaccination is one of the best ways to protect you from the virus.

PRC continues its vaccination program in support of the national government and has vaccinated 884, 279 individuals through its 26 Bakuna Centers and 17 Bakuna Buses nationwide.

The PRC Bakuna Bus is one of the various initiatives Chairman Gordon used way back during the polio, measles and rubella vaccination to reach the most vulnerable in far-flung areas.

“Magpabakuna upang maiwasan ang severe cases kontra COVID-19. Mayroon tayong mga Bakuna Centers at Bakuna Buses na patuloy ang pagiikot upang maabot ang mga walang access sa bakuna. Nagawa na natin kontra polio at measles magagawa rin natin ngayon. Let’s Win our War against COVID-19,” Chairman Gordon said.

PRC also conducts walk-in adult vaccination at the EDSA Boni Bakuna Center to hasten the vaccination efforts in Metro Manila.

PRC volunteers and staff are ready to vaccinate walk-in clients with J&J, Sinovac, and AstraZeneca primary series. Bakuna Centers are open to the public Monday to Friday from 9 AM – 5 PM and on Saturdays from 9 AM – 12 NN.

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon deployed a food truck to provide Hot Meals to 250 locally-stranded individuals (LSI) bound to Zamboanga, Cagayan, Ozamis, Cebu, and Bacolod last January 20, 2022.

PRC Welfare services, together with the Manila chapter, assisted 250 individuals stranded due to pandemic and the recent onslaught of Typhoon Odette.

Aside from Hot Meals, the PRC welfare team also provided clothes, face masks, and hygiene kits to address the current needs of the stranded individuals.

Among the beneficiaries is Jikala Jilpan, a 45-year-old fisherman from Mindanao who was amputated due to a mine explosion while fishing is currently staying in North Port, Manila, with his 9-year-old granddaughter.

“Maraming maraming salamat Sen. Gordon sa tulong na ibinigay niyo sa amin. malaking tulong po ito sa amin dahil mahirap maghanap ng pagkain ngayon,” Jilpan said.

“Kaagad ko ipinadala ang aming mga food trucks kasama ang aming welfare team upang mamahagi ng libreng hot meals, facemasks, hygiene kits, at damit sa mga stranded nating mga kapatid na badjao,” Gordon said.

PRC led by Sen. Gordon continues to provide much-needed relief to the most vulnerable families affected by the pandemic, and the recent onslaught of Typhoon Odette in Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao Region.

“Sa panahon na marami ang naghihirap sa bagyo at pandemya, narito lagi ang Philippine Red Cross na laging handang tumulong sa mga nangangailangan. ‘Di ko kayo papabayaan,” Gordon added.

Through the initiative of Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon to provide an immediate response to the Visayas and Mindanao region affected by the recent Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai), PRC Hot Meals on Wheels provided free ready-to-eat meals to 75,141 individuals, since the beginning of Typhoon Odette operations.

In the immediate aftermath of any disaster, access to food is usually disrupted, with displaced families unable to prepare their food. This threatens the health, nutrition, and well-being of affected communities. The “Hot Meals on Wheels” program seeks to address this by having a fleet of food trucks that could be easily mobilized to provide food relief within 24 hours of a disaster.

PRC’s Hot Meals on Wheels first started in 2005, through the vision of PRC Chairman Dick Gordon to provide food to the most vulnerable. PRC acquired its first food truck when Chairman Gordon donated his personal funds to procure a food truck and distributed it to the different PRC chapters in the National Capital Region.

As of this writing, PRC’s food trucks have catered to over a million people, responding to disasters like Bohol Earthquake and Zamboanga Siege in 2013, Mindanao Earthquake in 2019, Typhoon Rolly and Ulysses in 2020, and throughout the entire COVID-19 operations.

When the COVID-19 pandemic happened in the Philippines, imposing a lockdown in the country, Thousands of Filipinos lost their jobs, their source of livelihood, and have restricted access to food. Through PRC Hot Meals on Wheels, the humanitarian organization can provide food to the most vulnerable individuals such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and children greatly affected by the pandemic.

To intensify PRC’s covid response in providing Hot Meals to lockdown affected residents, PRC procured seven food trucks last July 2021, and an additional five more last October 2021, making it a fleet of 28 food trucks.

This initiative by PRC is in response to the imposition of strict community quarantine measures that restrict the residents to their access to food and other basic needs.

The food trucks are one of the first responses of PRC in emergencies and are currently stationed in key-strategic areas nationwide to hasten relief operations.

Each food truck is fully-equipped with an industrial-size rice cooker, warmers, oven, and burners. It is designed to provide on-site meals for the victims of disasters and calamities with no access to their homes or cooking facilities. Addressing the need for food is an immediate concern for these unfortunate persons.

“Sa panahon ng sakuna, isa sa pinaka mahalaga sa tao ay ang pagkain. Mahalaga ang mga Food Trucks dahil ilalapit na natin ito sa mga naapektuhan. Hindi na nila kailangan lutuin at kakainin nalang nila ito. May mga volunteer chefs at nutrionist din ang Red Cross upang masiguradong ligtas, masustansya, at masarap ang mga pagkain na ibabahagi sa affected communities,” Sen. Dick Gordon said.

PRC’s Food truck has played a vital role in emergency responses through hot meals distribution in evacuation centers, making it one of the first responses by the humanitarian organization to affected communities in times of crisis, disasters, and conflicts.

The hot meals on wheels is just one of the developments seen, as Gordon leads the Philippine Red Cross modernization program.

PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon continued his 2nd day of visit in the Visayas and Mindanao region to personally assess the situation to address the current needs of the Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai) affected residents.

Chairman Gordon will head first to Brgy. Punta Bilar, Surigao City and led the distribution of Jerry cans, Sleeping kits, Tarpaulin, and Hygiene Kits to 300 families. The donation is in partnership with Australian Aid.

Chairman Gordon will continue its route to Brgy. Jubang, Municipality of Dapa, Siargao Island to lead the distribution of food items, which contain soy sauce, salt, sugar, five cans of sardines, 25 kg rice, and 2 liters of cooking oil. Target beneficiaries for the food pack distribution are 250 families. The distribution is in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

“ALL OUT TAYO SA SURIGAO! Ito Pangalawang araw ng aking paglilibot sa mga naapektuhan ng Bagyog Odette. Personal ko na pinuntahan upang makita ko kung ano pa ang mga pangangailangan ng tao upang mabigyan ng agarang aksyon,” Gordon said.

Recently, Chairman Gordon deployed two medical tents with 30 cot beds to support Siargao District Hospital due to the increasing number of diarrhea cases in the area. Chairman Gordon will also visit the medical tents and will turn over 20 boxes of Intravenous (IV) fluid.

During the entire distribution, PRC mobilized its food truck and water tankers to simultaneously distribute hot meals and clean water to the residents in the said areas.

“Mula umaga, hanggang gabi, Tuloy tuloy ang Red Cross sa pagbibigay ng tulong sa mga nangangaialangan. Laging Red Cross ang Una, Laging handa, at Laging Nandyan kung saan kami kailangan,” Gordon said.

One month after Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai) pummeled 325 cities and municipalities across the Visayas, Mindanao, and Palawan region affecting more than 7.8 million individuals, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to provide humanitarian relief to different areas greatly affected by Typhoon Odette.

Typhoon Odette, hailed as one of the strongest typhoons recorded on earth in 2021, is similar to Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan), which brought torrential rains, strong winds, floods, and storm surges, affecting everything that comes through its path.

Although Typhoon Odette is not as powerful as Typhoon Yolanda, Typhoon Odette damage is comparable to one of the most destructive storms to hit the Philippines.

According to the infographic published by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), 1.36 million houses are damaged, displacing 2.9 million individuals.

PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Dick Gordon said that the humanitarian organization continues to provide non-food items which include 2,240 sleeping kits, 1,008 shelter tool kits, 3,698 tarpaulins, 1,190 mattresses, 706-bed sheets, and 157 blankets to individuals who were displaced by the Typhoon.

“Kaagad tayo namahagi ng mga non-food items kagaya ng mga sleeping kits, shelter tool kits, at mga tarpaulin upang maging temporary shelters sa mga nawalan ng tahanan. Kahit papaano ay malagyan ng bubong ang kanilang mga sarili,” Chairman Gordon said.

last January 13, 2021, Chairman Gordon appealed for more donations from the international community as the humanitarian organization continuously responds to Typhoon Odette-hit communities. Part of the appeal is to provide homes to the most vulnerable families who lost their homes.

Chairman Gordon highlighted that PRC has provided homes to over 151,000 families as part of the recovery process of families affected by typhoons.

Through the leadership of Chairman Gordon, Red Cross provided 80,207 houses to displaced families with the help of the international community and partner national societies.

“Noon pa tayo tumutulong upang mabigyan ng bahay ang mga apektado ng mga nagdaang bagyo. We dont just build houses, but we build hope to the most vulnerable na kahit anong mangyari hindi kayo papabayaan ng Philippine Red Cross,” Gordon said.

Despite the ongoing surge of COVID-19 cases in the country, Red Cross continues to be of service to the Filipino people. PRC is all out against the pandemic response manning the isolation facilities, emergency tents, vaccination centers, and testing centers.

“This should not be a forgotten disaster. A lot of our fellow Filipinos are still struggling from the onslaught of Typhoon Odette. The Red Cross will continue aiding the most vulnerable until they get back on their feet,” Gordon added.

Always being of service to the people especially the most vulnerable, the Philippine Red Cross(PRC) Molecular Laboratory offers discounts for their swab and saliva tests for senior citizens and persons with disabilities(PWDs).

“It is the Red Cross’ mission to provide hope to the most vulnerable. We make it a point to put our seniors and PWDs first. We want them to be safer as they are one of the most at risk, ” Gordon said.

At the same time, as the PRC puts a high premium on the health and well-being of the people, the humanitarian organization also prioritizes seniors and PWDs, especially in its ongoing COVID-19 responses. ” From vaccinating priority groups, setting up isolation facilities and ambulance services to cash grant distributions, and providing hot meals and other relief items to hard-hit communities, we continue to do what we do best- save lives,” Gordon added.

As of January 18, 2021, the PRC has tested 5,290,123 in their 14 molecular laboratories nationwide, conducting nineteen percent of the country’s testing output nationwide. This year, the humanitarian organization has already conducted 176,188 tests in their eleven molecular laboratories currently in operation.
