The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) intensified its operations after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit several parts of Mindanao, Thursday morning, October 31, 2019. This is the third time in two weeks that a strong quake jolted Mindanao.

PRC’s army of volunteers and staff rushed to treat injured patients and are continuously assisting affected individuals, especially those in badly hit areas in North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.

“We are all in this together. Since the first earthquake struck Mindanao on October 16, our team has been working round-the-clock, providing first aid and other humanitarian services like distribution of hot meals to the affected residents, such as those in Balabag Barangay Hall in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato which serves as temporary evacuation center for 400 affected individuals,” PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon said.

The PRC deployed 8 teams consisting of 2 from North Cotabato, 1 from Davao del Sur, 2 from South Cotabato, 1 from General Santos City and 2 from National Headquarters to conduct assessments and augment the chapters’ operations in different areas of Mindanao.

PRC North Cotabato Chapter sent teams to assess the situation in Kidapawan City and Barangay Ilomavis while volunteers and staff from Davao del Sur set up a temporary station and also deployed a team to conduct an assessment within the vicinity of their area.

PRC South Cotabato Chapter positioned its teams to assess the situation in the KCC Mall and Public Market due to a reported panic incident, a roving team was also mobilized by General Santos chapter within its area.

In order to save lives and to meet the demands of the affected residents especially the most vulnerable in the hard hit areas, PRC placed safeguards on the chapter’s blood bank refrigerated storage facility in Davao Del Sur Provincial Hospital particularly against power interruption.

The team of volunteers also set up tents and beds to provide additional support for the patients of the said hospital while a 15,000-liter water bladder was set up in San Miguel Elementary School in Digos City, a 10,000-liter water bladder was positioned in Balnate Elementary School in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur.

The PRC Ozamiz City Chapter warehouse is on alert status ready to deliver non-food items for the affected communities in North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to assess and monitor the situation resulting from the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that hit several parts of Mindanao, Tuesday, October 29, 2019.

PRC mobilized a total of 81 staff and volunteers, deployed 4 ambulances, 2 service vehicles, a water tanker, bladders and water purification unit to assist residents, especially the badly-affected in North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.

“Red Cross teams are providing first aid and other humanitarian services to the affected residents, such as, those in Upper Bala Elementary School in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur which serves as a temporary evacuation center,” PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon said.

Davao del Sur Chapter staff and volunteers provided psychosocial support to 155 quake-affected children and their families to relieve the stress.

PRC Sultan Kudarat, Kidapawan, South Cotabato, Davao del Sur and General Santos City Chapters also provided psychosocial support to 281 other individuals.

PRC staff and volunteers have provided hot meals to 254 patients and hospital staff, provided first aid to 74 patients in North Cotabato, Davao del Sur, General Santos, and Sultan Kudarat and monitored the blood pressure of 22 patients in South Cotabato and General Santos.

Teams from North Cotabato and Davao del Sur are on the ground assisted by South Cotabato, Iligan City, Davao City and General Santos City Chapters.

Other PRC Chapters in the affected areas are on heightened alert to provide assistance. In Davao del Sur, 6 patients were treated and another one transported to a hospital.

“In Kidapawan City, North Cotabato and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur where water access has been disrupted, PRC responded with a water station, bladders and water purification units for the community. Water tanker was dispatched to support the distribution in Digos City, Davao del Sur,” Gordon added.

In response to the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that hit several parts of Mindanao on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) immediately dispatched volunteers, staff, rescue teams, Emergency personnel and ambulances to South Cotabato, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, Davao del Sur, General Santos City and Davao City and is continuously assessing and monitoring the situation on the ground to determine further assistance needed.

“People have been evacuated such as in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, the Philippine Red Cross has assisted in evacuation of families,” PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon said.

Welfare desks have been established in North Cotabato and Davao del Sur to relieve the stress and trauma suffered by the residents while hot meals were also provided by PRC at the Dominican Hospital in Davao del Sur.

“In areas where electrical supply and water access have been disrupted, PRC is prepared to deploy field medical tents with generators for the injured and water tankers, bladders and filtration units for the community if needed,” Gordon added.

The concerned Chapters also activated Red Cross Action Team, Volunteers and Search-and-Rescue Teams.

In response to a different crisis situation, PRC recently finished its support to the Mass Polio Vaccination Program of the government in Metro Manila, Davao City, Davao del Sur and Lanao del Sur in Mindanao with more than 65,000 children vaccinated by more than 600 Red Cross volunteers from October 14 to October 27, and a continuation will be held in November 2019 and January 2020.

“The original target children to be vaccinated was only 30,000 but, with so much effort from PRC’s staff and volunteers, the target was doubled,” Gordon said.

This activity is in partnership with the Department of Health and with the support from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

PRC is also actively responding to the Dengue outbreak and has already served more than 6,600 patients thru its dengue medical tents installed in government hospitals in Iloilo, Cavite and Iligan City.

South East Asia Red Cross and Red Crescent Leaders convened in Makati City for the 16th Annual South East Asia Red Cross and Red Crescent Leadership Meeting.

This year’s meeting is hosted and chaired by the Philippine Red Cross with the support from the South-East Asia International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Secretariat.

In his opening remarks, PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon emphasized the importance of cooperation and coordination among National Societies in delivering humanitarian services especially in times of emergency situations.

Gordon also stressed the value of knowledge sharing and working together as a family in the midst of challenges that the ASEAN region faces such as typhoons and earthquakes.

“This is a partnership, if we don’t exercise the partnership that we all have in the ASEAN region, all the challenges in our region will not be met with the right mix of persistence, of vision, of making sure that we come out with our values, with our courage, commitment and continuity in all the things we try to do,” Gordon added.

Aside from catastrophes, Gordon said that the region is battling pandemics and epidemics, such as, dengue, measles and polio, which the Philippine Red Cross is currently addressing by providing auxiliary support to the Philippine government.

He also underlined the importance of unparalleled dedication of the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in helping and uplifting the lives of the most vulnerable during disasters and armed conflicts.

“Red Cross is a vocation, it’s a commitment, we are an international humanitarian organization, our fundamental principles make us a strong society because we are values-based and we earn the respect of everyone because there’s a Red Cross everywhere in the world”, Gordon said.

The leaders discussed the outcome of the previous meeting held on April 10 – 11, 2018 in Melaka, Malaysia, the S.E.A. Leadership side-event meeting of November 2018 in Manila and reviewed other priority agendas such as Reinforcing the Manila Call for Action commitments and regional targets, 1 Billion Coalition and the Asian Coalition for Resilience.

Participating in the two-day conference are leaders, Chairmen, Presidents, and Secretaries-General from IFRC, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent, Cambodian Red Cross, Indonesian Red Cross, Lao Red Cross,Malaysian Red Crescent, Myanmar Red Cross,Singapore Red Cross, Thai Red Cross, Timor-Leste Red Cross, Vietnam Red Cross, and PRC.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) received US$100,000 (approximately 5.1 million pesos) from the Republic of Korea as humanitarian aid for relief activities in the wake of the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit Mindanao. Korean Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Han Dong Man presented the donation at the PRC Tower in Mandaluyong City yesterday.

“I would like to convey my sincerest gratitude to the Republic of Korea for making Red Cross their partner of choice in providing humanitarian relief,” said PRC Chairman and CEO, Sen. Richard J. Gordon, noting that the partnership between PRC and the Korean Government has evolved into a long standing relationship.

Red Cross has been providing assistance to the affected population in Mindanao since the earthquake jolted the region last October 16. Right after the tremors subsided, Chairman Gordon ordered the quick mobilization of PRC staff and volunteers to give aid and immediate relief. Hot meals were served to 514 people, food items and sleeping kits were distributed to 51 families and four (4) liters of bottled water were given to each of the 46 families in Davao del Sur.

“PRC assisted instantly after the shaking. Patients from damaged hospital buildings were evacuated, welfare desks and first aid stations were set up at evacuation centers and basic needs were distributed to affected families. That’s how fast the Red Cross takes action. PRC is able to reach further and do more thanks to our partners like the Korean Government, through the efforts of Ambassador Han, which has been supporting us,” the PRC Chairman said.

Last year, the Republic of Korea supported families displaced by Mayon Volcano’s eruption and contributed US$200,000 (approximately 10 million pesos) which helped PRC reach out to thousands of individuals in Albay, including the 1,450 students who received school kits.

The Republic of Korea through its ambassador contributed $300,000 (approximately 15.7 million pesos) in support of PRC’s relief and recovery operations for communities affected by Typhoon Ompong.

Earlier this year, the Republic of Korea also donated an ambulance and a water tanker, which will help serve the most vulnerable communities in times of disasters and emergencies.

Ambassador H.E. Han Dong Man also offered to provide assistance to the mass vaccination activity of the PRC in response to the polio epidemic – one of the many health emergencies being attended to by the Philippine Red Cross.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is all set for the 16th Annual South-East Asia Red Cross and Red Crescent Leadership Meeting in Makati City on October 24 – 25, 2019.

The main objectives of the annual meeting are to discuss Movement policies and issues of the Red Cross and Red Crescent work among the National Societies, the Federation secretariat and the ICRC, agree on appropriate action and follow up, and to decide on issues of interest to the Movement in the region.

It also provides an important opportunity for Presidents, Secretaries-General and senior management to evaluate challenges, successes and future direction, as a way of further strengthening the world’s largest humanitarian network.

This year, the leaders will discuss the outcome of the previous meeting held on April 10 – 11, 2018 in Melaka, Malaysia and review other priority agendas such as the Manila Call For Action which was adopted by Red Cross and Red Crescent leaders during the 10th Asia Pacific Regional Conference, from November 11 – 14, 2018 in Manila, the One Billion Coalition for Resilience (1BC), Localization of actions, Migration, and Preparation for the Statutory Meeting.

Under the Manila Call For Action, the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of Asia – Pacific region are committed to Engaging Local Humanitarian Action in a Fast – Changing World.

These National Societies are also committed to adopting a community – centered approach that focuses on strengthening engagement with partners, branches and communities decentralizing management and resources allocation by National Societies, in line with localization.

The One Billion Coalition for Resilience (1BC), on the other hand, is an initiative introduced and designed by the IFRC to scale-up community and civic action on resilience.

Within the next 10 years, the goal is to engage at least one billion people in every household around the world in active steps towards strengthening their resilience.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) volunteers and staff are all geared up for the massive oral polio vaccination on October 14-27, 2019 in NCR and Mindanao areas (Davao del Sur, Davao City, and Lanao del Sur).

PRC will mobilize 550 trained volunteers and staff in the mass immunization. The group will be divided into four (4) men teams composed of a Leader, Vaccinator, Recorder and a Health Educator/Hygiene Promoter.

“Our target number for the children to be vaccinated is 30,000. PRC wants your children to be safe. Vaccines will keep away your children from diseases. It is the most effective way to prevent polio. Together, we can stop the spread of polio”, said PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon.

Support items for the mass vaccination activity like dossarts, masks, gloves, alcohol, and vaccine carriers were already distributed to all PRC chapters in NCR and the selected Mindanao areas. A Technical Training on Polio and Response Planning Workshop was also held recently as one of the preparations for the “Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio”.

PRC has a master list of the children who will receive the vaccination. Once vaccinated, a record will be made to make sure that no child will miss the two (2) remaining doses of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV). These are planned to be administered between November, 2019 to January of next year.

Parents will also be briefed about the importance of adhering to all government required child vaccinations. Red Cross volunteers and staff will also ensure the parents understand the importance of oral polio vaccine. They will also be handed information education and communication materials explaining the polio outbreak and its implications and a general knowledge of vaccination.

The synchronized oral polio vaccine is in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) and with support from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Cross Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
